Don’t Make Me Think: Free Chapter + Book Giveaway Contest!

Last week we ran a fun little book giveaway contest with our readers that went so well, we’re doing it again with another book. This time we’ve got a special for you from the team at Peachpit Publishing. They’re offering up a free PDF chapter from the iconic, “Don’t Make Me Think: A Common Sense Approach to Web Usability”, for all of our readers. Plus, they’re giving away a full hard copy (or e-copy) of the book to 2 lucky winners who retweet this post! Read on for the full free chapter download and contest details.

Contest!

The Free Chapter!

Five years and more than 100,000 copies after it was first published, it’s hard to imagine anyone working in Web design who hasn’t read Steve Krug’s “instant classic” on Web usability, but people are still discovering it every day. In this second edition, Steve adds three new chapters in the same style as the original: wry and entertaining, yet loaded with insights and practical advice for novice and veteran alike. Don’t be surprised if it completely changes the way you think about Web design.

After accepting the role of interim User Experience Designer to fill the Gap in our team have immersed myself in the world of design more than ever before. Time and again I am looking for inspiration, tips and the like and often come to webdesign tuts to brush up by Photoshop skills and improve them. Although I have been reading plenty of articles on webdesign, I feel this book would add the necessary icing to my learning.

I’d summarize the book in one sentence: “avoid question marks over your users heads”.

Of course, it’s more complicated than this, but whenever I doubt if I am/we are doing the right thing for a website, I picture someone’s face and ask myself if there would be a question mark over it.

I also wholly recommend Krug’s “Rocket Surgery made easy”, for people who want to do usability testing but do not have the resources for it.

    • Wouter

“I also wholly recommend Krug’s “Rocket Surgery made easy”, for people who want to do usability testing but do not have the resources for it.”

Some more context needed here: I mean for people who do not have enough resources for large-scale testing.

I think it’s really careless for any web designer to even start working on any project without having any knowledge on web usability. Designing a web site or even a single page isn’t about making it look good, rather it’s how your design will benefit the users. As a rookie in this field, I myself is absorbing all the information and knowledge I can get about the matter, and so I’m hoping to get my hands dirty with this book. Count me in! (@vladrys)
