Welcome to Webdesigntuts+!

Welcome to Webdesigntuts+!

Today we’re extremely proud to launch Webdesigntuts+, the 10th member of the Tuts+ family. Though we have a long history of publishing excellent web design content, Webdesigntuts+ is our first site completely dedicated to this topic – one which we’re very passionate about.

If you’re tired of the endless round-ups and lists circulating on web design blogs, we hope Webdesigntuts+ will offer a refreshing change. We’ll be publishing in-depth tutorials on designing complete interfaces and UI elements, coupled with in-depth articles on web design theory, workflow and strategy.

Better yet, we’ve recruited Brandon Jones (epicera), an industry veteran and ThemeForest top-selling author, to helm the site and make sure it’s the best web design blog around!

Bio: About the Editor

From sunny Southern California, Brandon Jones has been designing, drawing, photographing, and coding the world around him for the past several years. Not content to pick one media and stick with it, Brandon has developed a broad range of talents which have allowed him to work on projects ranging from grungy digital art kits to Fortune 500 software prototyping.

With a strong background in graphic design, digital illustration, and user interface design (as well as a smattering of front-end programming languages), Brandon has had the opportunity to work with a variety of award winning studios through his young career. He also has a background in communications and marketing. He has attended a number of colleges in Southern California, but counts himself as a largely self-taught and self-motivated designer with a desire to play a larger role in the design community. He is currently a student in the Cal Poly Pomona Design Department where he is finishing a new degree in Graphic Design & Art History.

Brandon Jones is currently the second highest-selling author on ThemeForest, Envato’s marketplace for buying and selling website themes.

I cannot wait for this site to get going :D REALLY looking forward to it guys, expect to see me haunting these halls a lot.

  • http://twitter.com/scriptin Dmitry Scriptin

Nice to see a tuts+ articles about web design.

    My wishlist:

[+] DO WANT: design theory (color, space, layout etc.), design psychology (perception, emotions), tools and techniques, designers’ best practices and habits.

[-] DO NOT WANT: photoshop/illustrator/fireworks/anything design-from-null tuts (I mean tool-specific tuts, not tuts about programs itself), 20 something wordpress themes (a lot of this on the internets), any kind of uninformative motivational posts.

    • http://rahulprasad.com Rahul Prasad

“[+] DO WANT: design theory (color, space, layout etc.), design psychology (perception, emotions), tools and techniques, designers’ best practices and habits.”

I strongly agree. These stuffs are not easy to find over internet, although we have alot of tutorial website out there but none focus on these stuff. Maybe because people dont care, but its one of the most important factor to be kept in mind while designing.

    • http://www.backwheel.no Erlend Mongstad

      I agree!

      Looking forward to this:)

    • http://webdesign.tutsplus.com Brandon Jones

      Hi Dmitry!

Thanks for the notes – We’re going to be offering a healthy range of tutorials and articles… from beginner “building blocks” tutorials where the basix are laid out to advanced “design theory” articles where we really dig into the theory of “why” you might want to do something one way or another. Either way, your note is taken and I’m actually excited that there’s been quite a few people like yourself asking for some juicy theory articles because we have lots of them on the way :)

      Cheers!
      Brandon

  • http://desaindigital.com Jeprie

We’ve also seen some webdesign tutorial in Psdtuts+. Is every webdesign tutorial now goes to this site?

What’s the difference between this and Nettuts+?

    • http://webdesign.tutsplus.com Brandon Jones

      Hi Jeprie,

Excellent question – this site has been founded with the purpose of focusing in on the “design” side of web-design. Where Nettuts will continue focusing on awesome content from the coding/dev side, Webdesigntuts will feature tutorials that teach the visual side of the industry.

There’s bound to be some crossover (which we’re excited about!), it might help to think of this site as covering everything up until you’re ready to ship a design off for coding :)

      Cheers!
      Brandon

      • ExtremRaym

and what about the webdesign tutorial already on psdtuts ?

and can we speek of webdesign without speaking coding ?

        cheers :P

        • http://www.project-lab.com Justin

I think this site will be dealing with designing a site with coding in mind, but not handling the code itself. As a web designer the two sides are very separate, but very much dependent on one another so I am VERY happy to see this site come up. Would have been great when I started as a web designer several years ago. There are so many things that you need to know to be an effective designer for the web and I think a site like this is the perfect way to teach those.

          • http://webdesign.tutsplus.com Brandon Jones

Thanks Justin – you hit the nail on the head. Jeffrey (the site editor at Nettuts+) and I will be doing some “crossover” tutorials where we handle the design here and then code it over there. One of my own goals is to provide a resource to designers that I didn’t have when I was learning, so I think we’re on the same page there. Thanks for the thoughtful comments!

  • http://envato.com Drew

Congrats on the launch Brandon and Tuts+ team! :-)

  • http://www.thelala365.com Lala

This will be a nice addition to NetTuts! I agree with some of Dmitry’s wishes such as articles on actual design theory along with designing with usability in mind would be very helpful. Adding WebdesignTuts to my Feedly!

    • http://webdesign.tutsplus.com Brandon Jones

Thanks for chiming in Lala – I’ll be listening closely to feedback like this :) It’s exciting to hear that so many people want to see more in-depth articles rather than the usual “50 Great Website Links” posts because one of our editorial missions is bringing high-level educational content to the community.

      Cheers!

  • Josh

    Woot!

  • http://bluefishdesignstudio.com Marcus Neto

Give a nod to the red headed step child of the web design world Fireworks. Would love to see some more advanced tutorials on using Fireworks.

    • Andy King

      +1.

    • http://webdesign.tutsplus.com Brandon Jones

Thanks for the feedback Marcus – your request is noted (and you’ll be glad to hear that you’re not alone in wanting to see more FW content)!

  • http://www.exposecreative.net Mischa Colley

Always exciting to see a new Tuts+ site an I think this is going to compliment NetTuts extremely well. I agree with Lala articles on designing with usability in mind would be great. Looking forward to seeing this site develop.

    • http://webdesign.tutsplus.com Brandon Jones

Thanks Mischa – we hear you loud and clear!

  • http://aiman.com.br Aiman Jalil Sarraf (@mannnq)

Welcome and congrats, about the wish i think Dmitry Scriptin said everything.

dont forget to put Webdesign Tuts+ on ‘Other Plus Sites’ at sidebar.

    Long live :}

    • http://webdesign.tutsplus.com Brandon Jones

Thanks for the comment Aiman – It’s exciting to hear that so many people are on the same page here – Just a little preview: while we will be publishing some basic tutorials for the beginners in the audience (fundamentals are important to us), we’ll actually have quite a bit of “high level theory” articles already on the schedule for this month as well.

      Cheers!

  • http://www.customicondesign.com CUSTOM ICON DESIGN

Dmitry Scriptin said is my hope. We want to learn something not to hear some round-up website… such as 50 best…. Very tired of this.

    Good luck.

    • http://webdesign.tutsplus.com Brandon Jones

Thanks for the comment – We (the editorial team) completely agree :) Expect good things to come!

  • Iestyn

I’d like to see a thorough article about the differences between Fireworks & Photoshop. Maybe even an article on designing for the web with illustrator cs5.

  • Net_junkey

Good news of this morning. I’m a newbie from Nepal on web-design and development. I’ve been much more dependent on NETTUTS for my learning resources on Web development. I hope this new topic will bring more consistent chapters on web-development special on open-source CMSs. Thank you so much to TUTSPLUS group and Hurray….. to Brandon Jones……

  • http://newwebmaster.ru Sergey-Vyatka

Happy Birthday, guys! And goog luck.

  • Ises

this is what i’ve been lookin’ for! we are waiting for the great tutorial, tips and trick from webdesign tuts+!
thanks and congrats for this launching! this gonna be one of my favorite site to visit.. ROCK!

  • http://www.creativedogs.net Luis Lopez

At first I thought that Nettuts+ have changed the name, but now I see better.
I love web design, the conception, wireframing, sketching, Photoshop and Fireworks, Markup, HTML+CSS and why not PSD to WP, I will be in touch with this new site of Envato Tuts+ Networks.

  • http://www.philohermans.com Philo Hermans

    Congrats Brandon! :)

    • http://webdesign.tutsplus.com Brandon Jones

Thanks Philo! Your article rocks by the way :) Can’t wait for everyone to see it.

  • http://www.arminder.co.uk Arminder Dahul

Excellent! Now I can come to one place and hopefully get a view on design trends, designing in Photoshop/Fireworks and converting it into a HTML/CSS layout.

  • Paul van der Heyde

Great adittion to the network! One to watch for sure…

I second Marcus’s request for the advanced Fireworks tutorials
    Cheers

    My wishlist:

[+] DO WANT: Tutorials on using opensource/free software to achieve same effect.
Like some tutorial on Gimp. Some tutorial on Kompozer/Quanta. Etc

    • http://webdesign.tutsplus.com Brandon Jones

Noted – I haven’t had the pleasure of really digging into some of the open source graphics apps, so I’ll have to put it on the agenda of things to research. If anyone out there is an expert on any of the open source apps, send me a message through the “Write for us” link: http://webdesign.tutsplus.com/index.php/write-for-us/

  • http://skipsoft.ygn.me SkipSoft

  • http://drake09.deviantart.com Kevin

Awesome! I cant wait to see whats in store for this Tuts Site! ;)

  • Evil Uncle

I’m just wondering what is the point of webdesign tuts? Isn’t this content covered in psdtuts and nettuts?

    • http://webdesign.tutsplus.com Brandon Jones

      Good question Evil –

Web design is a rich and complex field; where Nettuts will continue rocking out great content for coding/dev, and PSDtuts will continue producing awesome tutorials for graphics, Webdesigntuts will cover the culture, principles, and theory behind great web design. While both of the previous sites have covered bits and pieces of web design in the past, you can expect a focus on in depth articles that are relevant to web designers.

  • http://laranzjoe.blogspot.com lawrence77

    Congratulation guys….

Cant wait to learn web designing concepts… :)

Hello awesome editor, Keep the job awesome…..

    This totally made my day.

  • solidace

i would like to see how you make a website in photoshop and after that how to program it in dreamweaver.

    • http://webdesign.tutsplus.com Brandon Jones

Funny that you should mention that – we’re actually planning to have “crossover” articles where we design a website here and code it over at Nettuts. :)

  • http://www.movieviews.be Dennis

    This is very cool :-)
Congratz with the web design section :)

Awesome, the only thing that was really missing for me. Good luck, i’m subscribed!

  • http://www.sequestermckinney.com Sequester

Awesome site! I can’t wait to use what I am learning here to build out my own personal site at sequestermckinney.com. I would love to see a tutorial on grid based design and how to use that grid in wireframes, design comps and final production of the site in xhtml/css. Thanks so much! Great stuff! Can’t wait!

  • Rick

Great to see this site finaly online :D
hope to see the latest and the sickest designs on this site.

  • http://www.ksna.ir Mohammad

    Hello!

    this sounds WONDERFUL!
i will read all your Posts. i promise :)

i think by now, we need a section that discus about the ” web designing Strategies ”

to know how to design the web interface to attract more visitors, how to gain more time from the visitors! and so more!

i am researching on this issue right now,

    Best Regards, Mohammad!

  • vlad

I have been dying to see a good tutorial on web site resolution! specifically I want to know what are the optimal resolutions to design at and how you go about choosing it.

admittedly I haven’t been looking for the answer all that long, just the past few days, but the question has been on my mind for a long, long time, and I’d be very grateful if tuts+ would post a tut or a quick tip on the subject. you guys are my one-stop-shop for everything web/photoshop/photo related, thanks!

  • Shewmaker

I would like tutorials on Responsive Layouts using CSS3 Media Queries. Some of the designers who work with this but don’t really create basic tutorials are Jeremy Keith, Ethan Marcotte, John Hicks (Hicksdesign), and Simon Collison.

Andy Clarke is writing a book which includes some info on this topic.

Thibaut Sailly designed his blog using these techniques.

  • Jesse

I am really excited about this as well. I would love to hear more about the steps people (should) take when designing. Such as: research, sketch, fireworks, illustrator/fireworks, code, launch.

I find myself in this field but am not sure what professionals consider what the right tools are for each step and what are the typical steps.

  • http://www.webeautify.com/ Thierry Meier

First of all, congratulations to your 10th tuts+ site, I learned so damn much from you guys.

    Secondly, Wishlist:

I would love to see some tutorials and articles about how to get on ThemeForest. What things you got to mind to get on ThemeForest etc.

Another thing I would appreciate are some articles about things you need to include to your ThemeForest themes to raise it’s prize. Things like custom admin panels. A tutorial which would come with it (in this case, how to create a custom admin panel) would kick ass.

Some really high quality inspiration posts, like weekly or biweekly, covering some beautiful and well-designed sites would be welcome as well I guess. But not too much, since the most people are here to learn and not to get inspired. But inspiration posts would come as a welcome change. Maybe it would rock for people who are new to the business, to write an article about how to handle inspiration and use it in your own projects.

Colour articles are very welcome as well. Theoretical and practical posts. The practical post could maybe be: Choose a colour palette and use it correctly in your project.

Some small posts about neat, useful techniques, maybe not everyone knows, would be cool as well.

Soo, thats it for the moment. Maybe I’ll drop some other ideas in a few days. :)

Thank you guys. Can’t wait for the upcoming content.

  • sidman26

Congratulations! looking forward to great stuff from you guys

  • Stephen Bluck

Congrats to Brandon for getting this sweet position.

  • Nick

This is exciting! I’ve been a long time reader of the Tuts sites and my only suggestion over time was the desire to read more web design material. Can’t wait!

  • http://webdesign.tutsplus.com Brandon Jones

Thanks for all of the warm welcomes everyone! We’re listening closely to any and all feedback on the site, and we look forward to providing you guys/gals with some awesome content. If you have any suggestions, post them in the comments!

    Brandon

  • http://web.me.com/romanellod Denis

Yep it is great news you guys are starting off Webdesign+.
    Welcome board Brandon!
I have been with Tuts+ longer than an year and my favourite tuts are those ones which mix medias (like cinema 4 + photoshop or illustrator + flash) and show the results from begin to end, using the strengths of each application.
I am in a dilemma now… I am working on my web portfolio! I have designed everything using illustrator and photoshop, and then creating a project in Flash catalyst… But always there is a point were a get stuck (like programming and codes).
I would like to see a tut from top to bottom… like designing, working on interactivity / navigation, animation and codes.
Also comments about all the most popular applications to do all this process.
    Cheers
    Denis

    • http://webdesign.tutsplus.com Brandon Jones

      Hi Denis,

Thanks for the comments! You’ll be glad to hear we have some crossover tutorials in mind where we design a site here at Webdesigntuts+ and then walk you through the coding at Nettuts+. Hope to see you around!

  • Daniel D

    again..

Thanks guys, finally what i need

I want to see something of Flash Catalyst.

and again thanks for this new web.

    • http://webdesign.tutsplus.com Brandon Jones

Good to know – we have a Flash Catalyst article coming up :)

  • http://www.theproject-lab.com Justin

I would love to see some tutorials (or at least one) on non-destructive editing techniques and building a design file with editing in mind. As every web designer knows revisions are a pain in the butt if you aren’t building your files with changes in mind. Things like masking instead of deleting and creating layer styles on vector shapes to allow for layout changes and that kind of thing.

    -Justin

    • http://webdesign.tutsplus.com Brandon Jones

That’s an awesome idea for an article Justin – I’ve had some great discussions in the past on “non-destructive” editing and working in a dynamic environment – Most design teams that I work with actually have a set of “house rules” for this kind of stuff… it’d definitely make for an interesting article. I’ll add it to the schedule :)

  • http://www.tyleringram.com Tyler

Oh a new Tuts site! I’ll definitely have to keep an eye on this one!

  • http://migshouse.com Miguel Hernandez

I’m a big fan of open source software & its many merits. I’d like to see an “Using GIMP instead of Photoshop” article. Doing some of the things most use Photoshop for but using GIMP (www.gimp.org) instead, i.e. creating comps, etc. GIMP is basically the same tool as PS but things are just laid out differently (& it’s FREE to boot!) so when you put a PS expert in front of GIMP, they get a bit confused.

The ideas above are great. A “From Scratch” series where you start w/the initial client meeting & go all the way through project completion would be great. A “Design from a Programmer’s Perspective” series would be nice since budgets nowadays usually have programmers being designers. Also, beginner tuts & designing with usability (i.e. handicapped, elderly, etc.) would be great. Lastly, a “Business Bewares” series would be cool as we all have fun doing our work but handling clients & general biz stuff suck the life out of us & you don’t see many of these articles around.

This is great news! Congrats Brandon, a fellow colleague in SoCal!!!

    • http://webdesign.tutsplus.com Brandon Jones

Thanks for the feedback and notes Miguel! Much appreciated!

Most of these are perfect suggestions for Nettuts :) – We’ll be focusing on “design in general” over here, so it’s not likely that we’ll have tech/code specific content right away. Either way, thanks a bunch for the suggestions – I’ll pass them along to Nettuts if you don’t.
