Webdesigntuts+ Quiz #3: Testing Terminology

Webdesigntuts+ Quiz #3: Testing Terminology

This entry is part 3 of 8 in the The Official Webdesigntuts+ Quizzes Session
« PreviousNext »

So here’s the deal: I’m going to give you fifteen web design glossary definitions, and you’re going to tell me which term they each describe. You’ll regularly come across these terms on Webdesigntuts+ too. Good luck :)

Have a bash at the quiz then let me know your thoughts in the comments! Ideas for future quizzes are also welcome. Enjoy..

I’m not entirely comfortable with “The smallest unit of display used on a screen.” What about LCD subpixels?

Fair point Chris – I’ve rephrased it, thanks :)

      • Tom Green

Pixel is the correct answer, Sub pixels are a grid within a pixel. We also use pixels to determine resolution and distance. I once heard the Steve Jobs was asked by typographers if he didn’t know his Macintosh type sizes were incorrect. They pointed out that i inch of type was 72.27 points. It was therefore not correct to say 72-point type was one inch in height. Steve thought about it and ended the discussion by simply telling them, “There is no such thing as .27′th of a pixel”. I stand with Steve:-)

        Trivia time:

They are called pixels because …

The official term is PICture ELement but, for some odd reason, PICEL (sounded like pickle) ,just didn’t sound tecchie enough. Thus the “X”.

I am a wealth of useless information.

Yes you are Tom, I’ve said it many times :P Thanks!

PS) I rather like the sound of 1680×1050 pickles..

  • Tom

  • EmpreJorge

  • Josh Maxwell

    PICK ME!

    I love it!

  • http://designbigdreams.com Anthony

Maybe I just am missing it, but wouldn’t it be cool to see how we stack up? I mean I know what I scored, but is that relatively good? I think a general over view of how many people (or percentage of people) scored what. I have never looked in the comments of the quizzes before so I apologize if this has been asked for before now. Just figured I would chime in.

  • http://silverjerk.com Joey

I scored 100%, although I did almost select “Pick me” on the visual hierarchy question. Damn you ADHD!

LOL all correct except #7, I read it as The DOWNward vertical stroke, I need to sleep more.

Wait, you mean it WASN’T the sticky-uppy bit?! Well, at least Miss Piggy is proud.

I always love taking these quizzes because it tests my knowledge, I learn what I need to research more, and I laugh at some of the responses. font@gmail.com made me lul. So did Dora the Explorer haha. Keep up the awesome work!

  • http://nurakanbpo.com Kanchan Rai

YaY! Scored a 100% too, made my day!! This was really fun! I’ve taken all the quizzes posted before but never got a 100%, this time I wasn’t sure! I guessed two or 3 of the answers, and hoped for 80 -90 but a 100 amazing man!!

All this wasn’t that easy though! It’s the fruit of the labor. I have never missed a single article from this site. So, that paid off today. And yeah, this quiz thing is hell lot of fun and educating man! Keep up the good work.

I agree, Pickles sounds better! :)

  • Bruno Mateus

The only question that I got wrong:

“Design principle which dictates that related items be grouped visually, reducing clutter and making for a more organized layout.”

You should have mentioned also Proximity, not only Unity. I want a refund on my exam prepayment. :D

    • http://www.snaptin.com Ian Yates
      Author

Ooo bad luck Boris! I actually had proximity jotted down as the answer to begin with, but proximity is one of several forms of unity. Related items can be grouped visually in terms of their color, size, alignment etc. whilst having anything but close proximity :)

      Glad you enjoyed it though!
