With WP plugin being the early leader, I would be interested in knowing which plugins people are using. While I’m a big WP fan, I’ve always felt like the plugins for e-commerce are a bit lacking.

I have recently been impressed with OpenCart and how easy it is to use after giving up on Magento, which I felt like my clients would have a very hard time managing.

That’s a good point Jim – I’m surprised to see how WP plugins are faring against the dedicated eCommerce options; it will be interesting to hear which plugins get the most thumbs-up.

And yes, I’ve also experienced the hell that is teaching Magento administration to non tech-savvy clients :X

Great poll! Would it be possible to get 3dCart added as a poll option? I’m really looking forward to seeing the results across the board.

Well, as you asked so nicely :) Thanks for taking part!

Magento is awesome, and I want to learn more about it for use with shop-only sites. I have some limited experience with Prestashop, and it seems to be a very solid solution.

My favorite option, however, is Drupal’s Ubercart. It has made great strides in the last three years. I love Drupal, and Ubercart is definitely one of the best modules ever made for it. And as much as I like WordPress, I tend to avoid it for eCommerce sites. Even the plug-ins don’t seem all that great. You usually have to buddy it up with an autonomous shop.

I should check these other e-Commerce after, I’m done building my own custom cart system.

    +1 for Magento although,

since we’re also speaking of wordpress ecommerce plugins I’ve had a great experience with Jigoshop http://jigoshop.com/. Brilliant for small / medium sized shops :)

  • Philthyphillup

I could never get Magento working. I’ll go with WP for sure.

  • http://www.make-a-store.com Make-a-Store

Great list! I would love to see Make-a-Store’s Divinity E-commerce Suite on the list as a choice. I know it is more mid-tier than entry level, but it does have a lot of interest with SMB and home businesses. Can’t wait to see the ongoing results!

  • Udvi

This poll is great! I would like to learn about Magento and WP E-commerce. By the way, WP E-commerce site is rather this: http://getshopped.org/.

  • Ryan

While Magento’s documentation and community suck, the cart itself has always been amazing. The only thing I would like to see is a way to keep it updated similar to WP.

Magento can be a tricky script to work with so if anyone needs the manual here is the direct link: http://www.magentocommerce.com/wiki/4_-_themes_and_template_customization/catalog/welcome_to_the_magento_user_s_guide

  • http://www.streamtoyourtv.net John Deszell

All I really have experience with is Volusion…and I can tell you I do not like it one bit when it comes to creating/modifying templates.

Would love to learn about any of them other than that :)

Each added feature adds complexity to the system. While magento and many other dedicated e-commerce system are great as far as features are concern but they have 80% of features which a normal client don’t need. These features make them complex and very difficult to use as far as ease of use for non-techie clients is concern.

We prefer our own custom e-commerce system where non-technical client may easily manage what he want to achieve.

I wish these system should provide two admin interfaces. One being the simple just few easy to use option and other being an Advance admin interface where advance features may also be setup.

You should check out Thinkshop: http://www.getthinkshop.com/
    It’s free, it’s simple, it’s well documented (it’s in dutch though…)

  • Daniel

Not sure if anyone mentioned this. I just spent five hours researching. Cart66 seems to be the best if you need to use PayPal Pro (PayPal Website Payments Pro) and also want to take donations. I’d recommend Gravity Forms with that.

I’ve also used PrestaShop and since I know French already, I don’t have a problem reading the forums.

  • Daquan Wright

I’ve adopted CoreCommerce, it’s got a lot of back-end functionality and themes available that are simple to customize. While I don’t quite have the freedom I’d like, since it’s hosted that’s to be expected.

Would you be able to add LemonStand to list, please? There are lots of designers that prefer LemonStand because it really focuses on providing design and development flexibility. I believe your readers would love to learn about our product. Thanks

  • http://www.torpedojuice.co.uk Jez

You forgot the one of the best, if not the best out of that list:

    Lemonstand

    http://www.lemonstandapp.com

Best backend and best API out there IMO – I have tried them all and to miss Lemonstand off that list is a big mistake. It is completely design agnostic so for designers it is a dream.

I seriously ask you to to check it out and amend this poll.

  • http://www.ziehmdesign.de Hauke

Lemonstand definitely has to be on that list. Love it!

LemonStand is now on the list – a late entry, but the poll is indefinite so get voting :) Thanks for the suggestion!

    • http://lemonstandapp.com Danny Halarewich

Thanks! Maybe you could add the votes for LemonStand from the “other” field (before the option was added) onto that option so it’s a little more accurate?

  • http://outdoorfurniturecomforts.com Steph

    Lemonstand! I wouldn’t use anything else. :)

Anyone ever used ecwid? I must say, I love it! Nice and simple to use and style.

  • Ricky Hartmann

Ok, so firstly, I love the tutsplus site, I use premium and love everything they have to offer. I’ve never worked with eCommerce before, but the client I now have needs it to integrate with well UPS (priority) and FedEx. Do you guys still recommend using one of these solutions as far as that goes? On the UPS site, only 1 or 2 of these options are up on this poll and they didn’t rank very well… opinions?

    • http://lemonstandapp.com Danny Halarewich

Just FYI, Lemonstand supports UPS and FedEx great, out of the box. Good luck on your project!
