Samantha Warren: Get Stoked on Web Typography

Samantha Warren: Get Stoked on Web Typography

Just because you didn’t get to go to that awesome conference doesn’t mean that you can’t still watch the lectures! Each weekend, we’ll feature a recommended web design related lecture on Webdesigntuts+.

In this week’s talk we’re going to be watching a presentation by Samantha Warren at SXSW 2010; She’s a Senior Web Designer at Phase 2 Technology and an expert on the subject of web typography.

Video Lecture: Get Stoked on Web Typography

This is a slideshow + podcast, so you’ll want to open up the companion podcast .mp3 as you flip through the slides. Samantha will review a number of inspiration ideas about typography off-screen, and then she’ll explain how those same principles can be translated to the web via CSS3, @font-face, and more.

This relates directly to our latest article about “The Web Designer’s Guide to Font Replacement Technologies“, not to mention our monthly series on “Inspirational Web Typography“… and it’s a pretty darn fun listen, even if you just put it in the background while you work. Enjoy!

I still don’t quite get how fonts have a “feeling” and “formality” to them… The slide-show offered better examples than most typography posts I’ve read though.

Every font projects a message, just like every image, color, etc. that stimulates us visually. You may not realize it, but the choice of font is influencing you and your users.

the girl really is talented in great explanations ,, fonts do transmit emotions , and the way we use them sparks attraction to our contents ,,,,, luvvit ,,

I am horribly deficient at the selection of fonts. I always end up going with what I feel as opposed to what would probably go best with the page I’m making. But I guess when you are only making personal websites that really doesn’t matter as long as you are the one that’s happy with it. This was a very good presentation which clues us in on the fact that fonts and font styles are all around us. I have a large library of books that I have actually never looked at the print. Samatha Warren has a way of getting you to re-look at things

Everybody seems to be talking about typecamp as the place to learn about typography. Anyone heard of it?
