Web Design Workshop #10: Resumonk

Web Design Workshop is our weekly community project where we ask readers to submit their work for your friendly, constructive criticism. It’s the perfect way to learn, offer opinions and have your own work critiqued! This week, the landing page for an online app to help you pull your resume together..

Rules of Engagement

Play nice! We deliberately select work which will benefit from advice and pointers. If you can’t be constructive in your comments, don’t. Other than that, offer any advice you can give. Feel free to link to examples and images which back up your points.

The Design

Web Design Workshop #9

I have recently designed and launched my first web app called Resumonk. Resumonk is an online resume builder that saves you money and time by helping you create professional and beautiful resumes. Resumonk handles the job of formatting and converting your resume into pdf format, thereby letting you focus on writing quality content. – Bharani Muthukumaraswamy

Looking for constructive criticism on your own work? Submit it for a workshop – most but not all submissions are published. Be patient though, there could be a queue..

That there is a pretty safe and decent looking page. While I don’t think the page looks bad, you obviously would like to know how you can improve it. So here goes…
    1) I guess you’re using the typical blue buttons from Bootstrap. While I really like the buttons, I think the color of your logo and other elements is really being undermined because of the bright blue. I’d either make change the logo & footer colour or (more likely) tone down the color of the buttons.
2)The little monk looks cute, but I feel a little more work on making him more symmetric would go a long way. Currently it’s got this hand drawn feel which doesn’t quite fit in. That said, the image itself is unique and something to remember. I feel it belongs up top, next to the logo. Rather than where it is right now.
    3) Create Beautiful… That line should either have the text shadow or the background image. Not both.
    4) the picture slider probably will look better without the border…
5)The How it work section looks better in this picture. The ruled paper background looks bad. Specially because of the bad padding around the content. (It reaches the right border)
    6) I just noticed that the buttons don’t match the same blue on the live website. Again, I think you should stick to the same color.

Hope that helps. I tried to nitpick and give you all I could to make it better. Don’t get offended that I mentioned 6 points. It’s not a criticism of your work. I like the design. It’s pretty clean, and puts the product centre stage.

+1 to everything Nama said but I would also change the look of the “Spread the word widget”. It takes too much attention and doesn’t look nice like the rest of the page

Overall I think that the design looks great.

With that being said though, I think that the sign up form should come after the “How it Works” section. It doesn’t make a whole lot of sense to ask someone to sign up for something before they even know what it is or how it works. Just to give you an example of what I mean, take a look at http://www.shopify.com/. See how they provide a list of features and a video describing their product before they ask you to sign up?

I hope this helps you out Bharani. Best of luck to you and your app!

I love the design. I do agree with “Naman” though.

Btw, may I know what font you used on “Get started with your resume”?

Great layout! but I think your color palette lacks brand-consistency.

    in two words: Orange buttons.

While blue, they blend into the screenshot graphic and make Blue the dominant color.

that will really bring out the buttons, and strengthen the logo!

That small step will help increase trust in the Resumonk brand.

Other than that, I can’t see that you’re missing a thing.

Site looks good. Zumeo.com already does this and does it well.

Looks good. Safe, simple and easy on the eyes.

In my opinion though, the most important and ‘catching’ information is the information that is currently at the bottom: “How it works” and the images below. Reading only those three titles, I immediately know how it works and what to expect. Or perhaps you could combine it with the slider images in the top:

    Slide 1:
    (1) Fill in the details + screenshot portion + explanation

    Slide 2:
    (2) Pick a template + screenshot portion + explanation

    Slide 2:
    (2) Save and share + screenshot portion + explanation
