The Design

It’s still in the works, but I’m attempting to design a minimal yet sleek WordPress theme, with a touch of snazzy CSS3 here and there. Also, it will be a fully responsive site. – Jared Erondu

Looking for constructive criticism on your own work? Submit it for a workshop – most but not all submissions are published. Be patient though, there could be a queue..

Wow, this looks really great, I love such minimalistic style. I like the subtle pattern in the background and the soft shadow around the main content and the fact that the color is not too bright but not too dull either. :)

    - the top navigation looks a bit odd to me, maybe it’d look better if each of them had rounded corners on each side

    - the ‘older’ and ‘newer’ entries thingies on the edges – at first glance people can be confused as to what they are. It does become clear when I hover, but I think it’d be clearer if there were for example small arrows?

    - the space between the date and entry to me looks a bit much, maybe try making the gap smaller

    Otherwise it’s a job well done! :)

A nice Project ! Sleek indeed ! But still needs work :P

What are the tabs running off both sides that turn red and get longer when you hover on them for? This is seen on the view it live link.

Nice work! I’d probably fix the post date though. It looks like it belongs to the post above it although it’s not. And i would remove the border at the footer or at least put some padding between it and the social icons. As previous posters mentioned i also think that the prev/next buttons needs more attention. An arrow seems like a good idea and if there are no older posts i’d probably remove the arrow altogether.

Overall it looks good, but there are a few details I’d like to focus on:

    Header and Footer are beautiful.

Yes, there is too much distance between the date and heading. These two elements are part of a blog post, they belong together, and you should hint at some relationship between the two because at the moment they are too far apart.

“The closer the elements are together, the stronger the relationship that the user recognizes and the better the unity it creates.”

On the left hand side (the rollover tab) I don’t see any text when I rollover. The right hand side tab is fine (Older Entries), I like this but I actually have to rollover and wait to see what actual purpose these tabs serve. It should be more intuitive (putting arrows on these is a good suggestion but it may require some more thought and feedback when you actually apply that).

I’d love to see the About page to be really personal, maybe a few images of yourself and nicely aligned text but I assume your working on this. I don’t know if your finished with the comments section but it‘s a bit all over the place. I’m sure your in the process of cleaning this up though.

Archive page is cool but it’s creating problems by pushing the footer out of center.

    Hope that helps.

nice job Ian, thank you for the article, but i think its still needs work(some jQuery stuff and CSS3 thing).

Oh how I love a simple design!

Overall I think your design is very solid, there’s just a few things that need to be worked out.

    - The continue button should be bigger (maybe twice as big?) than the other links because arguably, it’s more important.

    - The comment button should be spaced out from the post a little bit more and also be made more visible.

    - Finally, the two tabs on either side of the post should be more noticeable. I honestly wouldn’t have even seen them if it wasn’t for someone bringing it up in a comment lol.

I’m sure you were already planning on fixing these small issues but I just wanted to make sure that I gave you a heads up.

Again, overall a great design. Best of luck!

Jared, the navigation looks much better now and I really like the way you managed the single entries, I like how the date and tags are on the left of the entry. I’m also thinking, that since the comment counter is up there as well, wouldn’t it be better to put the ‘comment’ link next to it? This way at the bottom it’s sorta lost in there. Or emphasize it a bit more, make it stand out more.

I’m not 100% sure about the new footer design. I liked the one before just fine. :) The orange/grey stripe on top looks a bit odd and the gradient at the sides kinda distracts me. :D

    Nice job.

I’d just add the same padding for all sides in the rounded box and make background pattern a little bit darker.

    Beautiful layout, simple and clean.

Nice and simple design!! Less is more. But I see you use typekit, and it makes the page load very slow. We also have this experience on some of our sites. Does anyone have a good alternative to typekit, that dont slow down the page like that?

    Hey!

Nice minimal design. I love the repeating background.
And highlighting color is used intelligently.
I think that Blogger, Designer & Entrepreneur should be capitalized not all caps.
Newer & older entries link is bit confusing. I think u should add arrow icon to links on static state.
What i think is Search should be somewhere on the top.
