3.1 Wrapping Up

Hey, and welcome to the final video of BoltCMS theme development. You started with nothing but a stylesheet and some JavaScript. And then you built a whole BoltCMS theme all the way from scratch, so that's really cool. You now have everything that you need to know to be able to make your own themes with Bolt from here on out. You can get a lot more complex with the Bolt theme. But you'll still be using all the same principles that you just learned. So you learned how to set Bolt up offline. You learned how to work with the tweed templating language. You learned how to create the three essential files of a BoltCMS theme, the index file, the listing file, and the record file, and you also learned how to set up error handling. You learned how to work with partial templates. You also learned how to make templates for different types of records depending on the slug of those records. And then finally, you also learned how to add live editing support into your theme. So that's a ton of stuff that you've now got under your belt. So, one, that's a really great job. Well done. And two, you can now use all of those techniques to create your own themes from scratch from here on. And if you'd like to get more advanced in your theme development, there's quite a lot that you can do with BoltCMS. One of the things that I would recommend checking out is learning how to create your own content types. So, even though strictly, that's not theme development, what you can do is come up with your own content types, specifically to drive different types of themes. So, let's say, for example, you wanted to create a site for a restaurant. If you learned how to create your own content types, you would be able to do something like creating a dish content type. You could then create a template to go with that content type, so that you could create a different record for every dish that that restaurant has on its menu. And then that would allow you to create a fairly streamlined way of giving that restaurant the ability to have a menu online with a dedicated record for each one of the dishes that it sells, and that's just one example. Another thing that you can do is add a search form into your theme. Now we didn't go into creating a search form in this course, just to keep things focused on the absolute fundamentals of working with a BoltCMS theme. But that's definitely something that you can look at learning to add in for yourself. And I'll point you to documentation that will help you along with that. So those just a couple of ideas, but really Bolt is such a flexible system, that there's all kinds of things that you can do. So I definitely recommend going and having a look at the documentation and seeing what ideas you get from that. And also, going and having a look at the GitHub repository. And having a read through the issues there because you'll see a lot of things discussed in the issues there that might not yet be fully documented. So that can be a great way to learn some extra ins and outs of working with the system. So I hope you've had a really good time with BoltCMS theme development and that you're feeling really confident to take what you've learned and start building your own themes from the ground up. Thanks so much for taking this course. And I'll see you in the next one.
