2.2 Choosing a Theme

As you saw in the previous lesson, the online store uses the “Debut” theme by default. If by any chance you don’t like this theme, you can change it easily. Shopify gives us the option to choose between a couple of free themes, but it also has a theme store where you can buy ”premium” themes. Let’s check out some themes.

2.2 Choosing a Theme

Hey guys, welcome back to the course. As you saw in the previous lesson, it just took a couple of minutes to sign up and get our store up and running. Now, just in case you don't like this initial theme which, let's have a look at it. We'll go to online store. Clicking this link, and then Themes which is activated by default, we'll see that the current themes called the Debut. And you can go ahead and explore the free themes offered by Shopify or we can visit the Theme Store where Shopify sells more, let's say, premium themes, right? They're a little bit more polished. Maybe they have some extra features, but they also cost a lot of money. Just in case you don't find a free theme or a theme on the Shopify theme store, you can always head over to ThemeForest which is the child of Envato, one of the Envato children, let's say. You can head over to ThemeForest and go to the e-commerce/Shopify category there where you'll find a bunch of Shopify ready themes. Now, let's go ahead and explore the free themes here. We have a couple of them. This is Debut, it's also indicated as the live theme right now. And clicking on a theme will give you a description, some features for that theme. They might have different styles included. And let's check this out. And depending on what you want, you might go for one theme or another. For example, this Boundless theme is optimized for large images. We don't really have large images here, so maybe this is not the best fit for us. This Brooklyn theme, for example, is mostly designed for modern apparel stores. But we're not selling clothes, we're not selling shoes or anything, we're just selling toys for pets. So this is, again, not a good match for us. But just for the kicks, let's see how we can activate a new theme. So let's go with the Simple theme. And I'm gonna say Add Simple. Okay, so it's currently adding Simple. And after we successfully added Simple, yeah, we can see it right here, and we go to Actions. We can Preview it, or we can Publish it to make it the active theme. So we'll hit Publish. So now, our store goes from this to this. All right, this is indeed a very simple theme. There is not much in it. Right? So that's how you can change a theme. Now, let's go ahead and open the theme store which actually opens in a totally different tab here. Now, for these themes, we can actually see a slideshow here with probably the featured ones. You have sections for trending themes. And these are actually divided into more useful categories, like for example, great for small inventories, like the one we have. Minimalist style, browse by industry. So if we check out all industries, let's see, Toys & Games, I think this is where our online store will fit. Maybe something like this. Although, this is more suited for toys for children, judging by the very bright colors and fonts that are being used. Or maybe this one will be suited for our toys for pet store. All right, you have different variations of this. So if I were to buy a theme right now it would probably be this. But it's $180. So what I'm going to do is actually stick with the default theme. I think that looks just fine for the purposes of this course, so we're gonna publish this again. And now we're back at our default look. All right, now that we saw how to work with the different themes and how to browse for them, and also how to activate one of the themes, I think we need to start adding some content to our story. In the end, we have an online store which sells stuff, which sells various products. Now, it's always a good idea to categorize those products or to split them into groups or categories. We're going to do that in the next lesson. So I'll see you there.
