2.5 Setting Up Enrolment Options for Students

In this final lesson, you’ll learn how to set up the enrolment options for your students. Moodle is very flexible in this regard; you can allow anyone to register, or you can set up preferential access based on enrolment keys.

2.5 Setting Up Enrolment Options for Students

Welcome back. In this lesson you'll learn how to set up the enrollment options for your students. And Moodle is actually very flexible in this regard, because it can allow anyone to enroll or sign up for a course or you can set up preferential access via enrollment keys. So let's learn more about this. To set up enrollment for your course, you would go to Set administration and you'll search for Manage- authentication. And it's this this page right here, you can find it under administration, plugins authentication, and manage authentication. Here, you would need to set up email based self registration. So click this little eye icon to disable it or click it again to enable it. Then you would scroll down until you find common settings and under self registration, you would select email based self registration. Once you do that, you can go ahead and save changes. Of course you can also go through all the other options for example, do you want to allow people to log in via email? Or do you want people to use multiple accounts with the same email? All of this can be selected from here. Now apparently this was not set properly, so let's actually save the changes again. Okay, and by doing that, students will now be able to use their email address to self register to your courses. Now if you want to allow everyone to sign up to this course, great, you're pretty much good to go. But if you want to filter or limit the access, you can set up what's called an enrollment key. And to do that, here's what you do. You would open up your course and then you would go to Participants. This is basically the list of your course students. You would click the gear icon and select enrollment methods. Now where it says self enrollment, go ahead and click that eye, and then click the gear icon. And this is where you can type the enrollment key that you want to use. This is like a password, and students will require this key to be able to enroll to your class. So go ahead and type in your enrollment key, hit enter, and that's gonna save your changes. You can also use group enrollment keys, and that's gonna allow students to enroll two different groups. But for now, let's go ahead and hit save changes. And once you do that, students will now be able to sign up or enroll to your course by using the enrollment key that you just defined. And once they sign up, you'll be able to see all of them in the Participants tab right here. And with that we can bring this short course to an end. This was just a quick introduction to Moodle, but there is a free trial available that you just saw me use, and you can use that as well to play around with the software and learn if it's the right fit for you.
